International Day of the Girl

A global campaign leading to the UN officially creating an International Day of the Girl in 2011

The Art of the Possible Method

Plan Canada saw the Canadian parliament pass an all-party resolution calling for Canada to lead in creating an International Day of the Girl at the United Nations. Within one year, Art of the Possible supported a Canadian-led global campaign across regions to achieve the establishment of the International Day of the Girl by the UN General Assembly in 2011.

The Impact

The International Day of the Girl created a foundation for global action on girls rights to address the discrimination and other barriers girls face simply because they are young and female. Since 2011, campaigns, events and actions have taken place all over the world to address local and global issues of gender inequality and child rights. For example, the Girls Belong Here campaign has placed girls in positions of power at the highest levels in government around the world.
